ICICI Prudential AMC<\/a> recently announced that they have re-started lumpsum investment in the ICICI Prudential Small Cap Fund<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>starting March 19th. The direct plan of the fund manages Rs 175 Crores and the fund manager is Mr Harish Bihani since Nov 2018. Prior to joining ICICI Prudential Mr. Bihani worked at\u00a0SBI Mutual Fund, Kotak Institutional Equities, and CIMB Securities among others. He also manages\u00a0ICICI Prudential Long Term Fund (ELSS)<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We reached out to Mr Bihani over email for comments on the small cap space and their view behind their timing to allow lumpsum investment in this fund.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Gaurav Rastogi (GR):<\/strong> How would you put the recent under-performance\u00a0of small caps in historical context? And what does it mean for expected returns going forward?
\n
\nHarish Bihani (HB):\u00a0<\/strong>The valuations for small cap in the last few quarters has cooled off post the correction as compared to the last few years where the valuations for small caps were expensive. Historically, smallcaps show higher volatility in the short term, however for a longer period smallcaps provides good opportunity for wealth creation.<\/p>\n

We believe post the correction the small cap space has become favorable for long term investment and should be recommended for those investors who have good appetite for volatility and comes with a long indicative investment horizon.<\/p>\n

GR: <\/strong>What is the philosophy behind ICICI Pru Small Cap fund? And what is the investment process?

HB:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Research & screening process<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThe team of analysts provides me with their top picks and then I review the list and assigns the weights. The small-cap universe of 250+ stocks is reduced to about 40-50 stocks following the research and screening process. The filters used for the screening process* are as follows:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Corporate Governance<\/strong> \u2013 Companies with relatively better corporate governance fundamentals are given preference while constructing the portfolio<\/li>\n
  2. Opportunity-Size of the Sector<\/strong> \u2013 Then, the expansion potential of the sectors or sub-sectors that the companies are present in are reviewed. The higher the potential, the better the chance of the stock being selected.<\/li>\n
  3. Leverage-levels<\/strong> \u2013 Companies burdened by high levels of leverage or debt are filtered out.<\/li>\n
  4. RoE (Return on Equity)<\/strong> \u2013 Companies having relatively low RoE with limited scope for any improvement in the future are taken out.<\/li>\n
  5. Earnings Growth Potential<\/strong> \u2013 Companies having good earnings potential over the next three year period are considered.<\/li>\n
  6. Valuations<\/strong> \u2013 Companies available at very high valuations are also not considered<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    All the stocks in the portfolio are chosen methodically based on the above mentioned process leaving little room for individual biases and Fund Manager dependence.<\/p>\n

    GR: <\/strong>Any particular sectors you are bullish on and why?
    \n<\/strong><\/p>\n

    HB:<\/strong> This is a pure bottom up strategy portfolio and hence we do not take sector calls.<\/p>\n

    GR: <\/strong>What kind of investors should be thinking about investing in a Small Cap fund?<\/p>\n

    HB:\u00a0<\/strong>The scheme should be recommended for those investors who have good appetite for volatility and comes with a long indicative investment horizon.<\/p>\n

    GR: <\/strong>The past 5 years have been really good for small cap funds. What kind of return expectations should investors have going forward from small cap funds.<\/p>\n

    HB:\u00a0<\/strong>We believe with the valuations getting cooled off and earnings expected to improve in the coming quarters, small cap space can be considered\u00a0 for investment. To add, small cap space normally performs well over a long cycle and keeping the same in mind small cap can be considered over the next 10 years for investments and wealth creation.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    GR: <\/strong>Now that ICICI Pru Small Cap has restarted lumpsum investments, how do you think the other AMCs which still do not allow lumpsum investments in Small Cap funds are going to react?<\/p>\n

    HB:\u00a0<\/strong>ICICI Prudential Smallcap Fund got repositioned from ICICI Prudential Indo Asia Equity Fund in May 2018 post Categorization and Rationalization of Mutual Fund schemes. The scheme has an AUM of Rs 175.58 crores as on Feb 28, 2019. This makes it relatively easier for the scheme to adapt and to capitalize any market opportunities.\u00a0Its completely an internal call of a fund house<\/p>\n
