cannot hold regular resident savings accounts. two options exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">nre account.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0non-resident external. for foreign earnings converted to rupees. interest is tax-free. funds are fully repatriable. this is the preferred account for investments where repatriation is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">nro account.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0non-resident ordinary. for income earned in india. rent, dividends, pensions. interest is taxable. repatriation is limited to usd 1 million per financial year with ca certification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">for liquid fund investments, nris can use either account. nre investments allow full repatriation. nro investments have repatriation limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">kyc compliance.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0nris must complete kyc before investing. documents required include pan card, passport, overseas address proof, visa copy, and bank account details. in-person verification or video kyc may be required. central kyc allows a single process across all financial institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">country-specific restrictions.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0nris from the usa and canada face additional restrictions. some fund houses do not accept investments from these countries due to fatca compliance requirements. certain fund houses may be more accommodating than others. checking with the asset management company before starting is advisable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_liquid_funds_are_taxed_for_nris\"><\/span><strong><span class=\"\">how liquid funds are taxed for nris<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">tax treatment depends on when the units were bought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p tds at 30% on the gains. if actual tax liability is lower, a refund can be claimed by filing an itr.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">dtaa benefits.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0india has dtaas with many countries. these prevent double taxation on the same income. however, dtaa does not reduce the tds rate on debt fund gains.
