class="wp-block-paragraph">investing is often treated as a purely analytical exercise. spreadsheets, ratios, and projections dominate the conversation. but the real driver of investor outcomes is not intelligence or access to information. it is emotion.

most people are aware of their own emotions. the problem is that they assume emotions are irrelevant to financial decisions. they are not. they are the primary force behind the gap between what the market returns and what investors actually earn.

the behaviour gap

the behaviour gap is the difference between the returns an investment generates and the returns an investor actually earns. it is not a small gap. value research found that between 2005 and 2023, the bse sensex delivered an annualised return of roughly 13.4%. the average investor in a diversified equity fund earned only 8.5% .

this gap exists because of emotions.

greed. the chase that leads to buying high

greed is a powerful force. when markets are rising, it feels smart to put more money in. stories of quick wealth circulate. friends share screenshots of their gains. the instinct is to join.

the problem is that greed usually arrives after the market has already gone up. by the time the emotion is felt, the easy gains have been made. the investor buys high .

when the market eventually corrects, the same greed that caused the purchase turns into fear, leading to selling low. the pattern repeats.

fear. the instinct that leads to selling low

fear is more powerful than greed in shaping behaviour. the pain of a loss is roughly twice as intense as the pleasure of an equivalent gain .

when the portfolio drops, the visceral reaction is to get out. the instinct to flee overrides any rational argument about long-term compounding. investors who panic-sell in a downturn rarely buy back in before the market has recovered. they miss the sharpest upward moves.

the cost of missing the best days. a ₹10,000 monthly sip starting in january 1990 and continuing until march 2026, if fully invested in the sensex, would have grown to roughly ₹8.15 crore. missing the 10 best days would have reduced the corpus to roughly ₹4.60 crore. missing the 30 best days would have reduced it to roughly ₹2.22 crore .

the investor who sells during a downturn is not just avoiding losses. they are guaranteeing that they will miss the recovery

overconfidence

overconfidence is common among investors. people tend to overestimate their ability to predict market movements, believe that good outcomes are due to skill rather than luck, and trade far more than is prudent. the confidence feels justified during bull markets. it collapses during corrections.

overconfident investors often concentrated their portfolios in a few stocks or sectors. the belief that a specific sector is “obviously” poised for growth led many investors to put large amounts of money into technology stocks in early 2025. the sector fell, and the concentrated exposure fell with it.

confirmation bias

confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that confirms existing beliefs. investors ignore data that challenges their views. they hold losing positions too long because they are waiting for their original thesis to be validated. they add to losing positions, doubling down on a mistake.

the investment landscape is more confusing than it is clear. the problem is that doing nothing while the portfolio is falling is almost impossible . confirmation bias drives the wrong action.

peer pressure and herding

the fear of missing out is a powerful force. when everyone else seems to be making money, sitting on the sidelines feels like a mistake. investors buy at the peak because they cannot stand being left out. the willingness to “do what everyone else is doing” is the hardest instinct to overcome.

the best returns often come from doing the opposite of what the crowd is doing. the crowd is most often wrong at turning points.

what to do instead

build a system. sips remove timing decisions. monthly contributions continue regardless of market conditions.

automate. keep emotion out of portfolio reviews. check quarterly, not daily.

write down an investment policy. decide in advance what to do during corrections. commit to staying invested for a fixed period. a written plan is harder to ignore when markets drop.

remember the two truths. the quality of investment decisions is often judged by the outcome, not the process. good decisions can have bad outcomes. bad decisions can have good outcomes. focus on the process.

frequently asked questions

1. what is the behaviour gap in investing?

the difference between what an investment earns and what the investor actually earns. emotions like greed, fear, and overconfidence drive this gap.

2. why do investors buy high and sell low?

greed drives buying when markets are rising. fear drives selling when markets are falling. the pattern is a product of human psychology, not market mechanics.

3. how does fear affect investment decisions?

fear leads to panic selling during market downturns. investors who sell during a downturn often miss the
