You tell the platform: buy this stock now, at whatever price the market is offering .

There’s no price target. No waiting for a dip. The order goes to the exchange, matches with the best available seller, and executes in seconds.

The convenience has a cost. In a fast-moving market, the price can shift between the moment you tap “buy” and the moment the trade fills. If Apple is trading at $215 and you place a market order for 10 shares, you might get filled at $215.40 instead . That 40-cent gap is the spread the difference between what buyers are willing to pay and what sellers are asking.

For liquid stocks like Apple, Microsoft, or NVIDIA, the spread is typically a few cents. For smaller US stocks with thinner trading volume, that gap can be wider. A market order in a thinly traded name can fill several percentage points away from the last quoted price.

US Market Hours in IST: When You Can Actually Place the Order

A market order only executes when the US market is open. That means late nights for Indian investors.

The NYSE and Nasdaq run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday to Friday. In IST, that translates to:

During US daylight saving (March to November): 7:00 PM to 1:30 AM IST

During US standard time (November to March): 8:00 PM to 2:30 AM IST

The one-hour shift happens twice a year when the US adjusts its clocks. Indian investors who don’t track the change find themselves placing orders an hour late or early for a few weeks after each transition .

There are also US market holidays to account for. New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are all closures . On those days, no orders execute.

What about placing a market order outside these hours?

Most platforms don’t allow it. A market order requires a live market to price against. If the US market is closed, there’s nothing to execute against . You can queue a limit order buy at $200 or below, for example which sits pending until the market opens and the price condition is met .

Some platforms offer after-hours trading, but that’s a different game. Liquidity is thin, spreads are wide, and market orders are often restricted to limit orders only .

The Order Placement Flow

Here’s what happens when you place a market order from India, step by step.

Step 1: You’re logged into the platform. INDmoney, Vested, Upstox, or a GIFT City platform like NSE IX Global Access. The account is funded and the USD balance is showing .

Step 2: You select the stock and choose “Market Order.” The platform shows the current bid-ask spread. For a liquid stock, the numbers are close together.

Step 3: You enter the number of shares or the dollar amount. Most platforms support fractional investing. You can buy $50 of NVIDIA without owning a full share . Enter the quantity or value and tap buy.

Step 4: The order routes to the US exchange. The platform’s US broker partner DriveWealth for Vested, for example sends the order to the exchange . This happens in milliseconds.

Step 5: Execution. The order matches with the best available seller. The fill price appears in your account. If the stock was trading at $215 and the spread was tight, you might get $215.02. If volatility spiked, you might get $215.80.

Step 6: The trade is recorded. Your portfolio shows the new position. The USD balance decreases by the trade value plus any applicable fees.

What It Costs (Beyond the Stock Price)

The stock price is just the start. Several costs stack on top of every market order.

Forex spread. This is the biggest cost in US investing from India. Your rupees convert to dollars before the trade. The conversion rate includes a markup over the interbank rate. Vested and INDmoney spreads run up to ₹1.25 per dollar — roughly 1.2% to 1.5% . Vested’s co-founder estimated a customer can spend about 3% on spreads for both-side remittances (sending money and bringing it back) .

GST on the conversion. 18% GST applies to the service value of the forex conversion, not the full amount. It’s folded into the rate most platforms show .

Brokerage. Some platforms charge zero commission (Vested, INDmoney). Others charge 0.1% to 0.25% per trade, capped at $25 to $35 .

US regulatory fees on sells. When you eventually sell, there are pass-through exchange and clearing fees plus SEC regulatory charges. These work out to roughly 0.03% to 0.08% of the trade value .

TCS on remittances above ₹10 lakh. Under LRS, remittances up to ₹10 lakh in a financial year attract no TCS. Above that, 20% TCS applies on the excess. It’s not a cost it’s a tax payment that appears in Form 26AS and gets adjusted against your final tax liability. But it blocks cash until the refund processes.

Market Order vs Limit Order: When to Use Which

A market order prioritizes execution certainty. You will get the stock, unless the market is closed or there’s no seller. You just don’t know the exact price until it fills .

A limit order prioritizes price certainty. You set the maximum you’re willing to pay for a buy, or the minimum you’ll accept for a sell. The order only executes if the market reaches that price .

For liquid mega-caps Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon a market order during regular hours is usually fine. The spread is tight, the fill is fast, and the price difference is negligible.

For less liquid stocks, or during volatile periods like earnings announcements, a limit order gives you control. You avoid the scenario where you tap buy at $215 and get filled at $220 because the market moved in the seconds between your tap and the execution.

There’s also the practical issue of timing. If you place a market order at 11:00 PM IST during a Fed announcement, volatility can spike. The fill price might be meaningfully different from the quote you saw when you placed the order.

The Tax Reality for Indian Investors

US stock gains are taxed in India, not the US (except dividends).

Holding period matters. For US shares, the long-term threshold is 24 months, not the 12 months that applies to Indian listed equity. It gets you into the stock. It doesn’t guarantee the price.

For Indian investors buying US stocks, the practical rhythm is: remit funds (which takes a day or two), wait for the US market to open (7:00 PM or 8:00 PM IST), and place the order. The forex spread is already baked into the dollars sitting in your account. The market order is just the final step.

The bigger decisions happen before you click buy – how much to remit, which platform to use, whether the stock justifies the forex cost of getting in and eventually getting out.

FAQs

1. Can I place a market order for US stocks outside market hours?

No. A market order needs a live market to execute against. If the US market is closed, the order either gets rejected or queued as a different order type. Limit orders can be placed 24×5 on most platforms and execute when the market opens and the price condition is met .

2. What US market timing applies to my order in IST?

During US daylight saving (March to November), the regular session runs 7:00 PM to 1:30 AM IST. The shift happens twice a year.

3. Why did my market order fill at a different price than I saw?

The price you see on screen is the last traded price or the current quote. By the time your order reaches the exchange, the best available price may have changed. This is normal, especially in volatile markets or less liquid stocks .

4. Is a market order better than a limit order for US stocks?

For liquid stocks during regular hours, a market order is fine — the spread is tight. For less liquid stocks or volatile periods, a limit order gives you price control. The trade-off is that your order might not execute if the market never reaches your limit price .

5. What taxes apply when I sell a US stock bought via market order?

The holding period determines the tax. Under 24 months, the gain is short-term and taxed at your slab rate. Over 24 months, it’s long-term and taxed at 12.5% without indexation.
