Breadth answers a question that index cannot: how many stocks are actually participating in the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_breadth_measures\"><\/span><strong>what breadth measures<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simplest measure is the line. Breadth tracks the difference between stocks going up and stocks going down each day. If more stocks rise than fall the line moves up. If more fall the line moves down. When the index makes a high but the advance\u2011decline line does not that is a divergence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two other gauges do most of the work. The percentage of stocks above their 50\u2011day moving average shows short\u2011to\u2011medium\u2011term participation. The percentage of stocks above their 200\u2011day moving average shows the longer\u2011term trend.. The count of stocks hitting new 52\u2011week highs versus new lows shows whether leadership is expanding or shrinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"why_narrow_rallies_happen\"><\/span><strong>why narrow rallies happen<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A narrow rally is not automatically a thing. Early in a cycle leadership is usually concentrated. The market pays up for the companies with clear earnings visibility or a new product and the rest lag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is when narrow leadership persists and the rest of the market deteriorates. The index keeps climbing. Fewer and fewer stocks are doing the climbing. In India analysts have noted that when large caps rally while mid and small caps fall money moves into perceived havens rather than chasing broader growth. Historically that pattern has preceded corrections first in mid and small caps then in large caps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_the_Indian_data_showed_in_2026\"><\/span><strong>what the Indian data showed in 2026<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers from October 2026 make the divergence concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">84 percent of 50 stocks were trading below their 200\u2011day moving average. For a longer\u2011term trend gauge that is extreme. The index itself had just come off its weekly losing streak in 25 years and it was trading below its 200\u2011week moving average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the NSE 500 level the picture was mixed. 12 Percent of stocks were above their 20\u2011day moving average and 16 percent were above their 50\u2011day average. Those are oversold readings, similar to what was seen near the end of the March correction.. Medium and long\u2011term breadth was not as depressed. 36 Percent of stocks remained above their 200\u2011day average against 15.8 percent during the March bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gap matters. The short\u2011term breadth was washed out which suggested a relief rally was possible. The longer\u2011term breadth had not capitulated, which meant the structural bottom might not be in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_read_a_divergence\"><\/span><strong>how to read a divergence<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A divergence is when price and breadth tell stories. The index makes a high but the advance\u2011decline line makes a lower high.. The index rises while the percentage of stocks above their 50\u2011day moving average falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Divergences are not sell signals by themselves. They are warnings. The market can keep rising on leadership for months especially when buybacks, passive flows or policy support keep the largest names bid.. They tell you that the rally is relying on fewer stocks and that the downside risk is concentrated in the leaders. If those leaders stumble there is no base of participation to hold the index up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_retail_investors_should_take_from_this\"><\/span><strong>what retail investors should take from this<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breadth is descriptive not predictive. Breadth tells you what is happening now not what will happen next. Strong breadth can persist for months. Weak breadth can persist for months too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an investor holding index funds or large\u2011cap stocks breadth is a useful context check. If the Nifty is at a high but the advance\u2011decline line is falling the index is not telling the full story. The portfolio may be more concentrated, in a few names than it appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical use is not to trade on breadth. It is to understand what the index is actually doing. A broad rally, where most stocks participate is structurally healthier than an one. That does not guarantee it will continue.. It does mean the market is not leaning on a handful of companies to hold it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"FAQs\"><\/span><strong>FAQs<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. If the Nifty is up but most of its component stocks are down breadth is weak. If most stocks rise together breadth is strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. What is the advance-decline line?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a measure of the difference between stocks that go up and stocks that go down. Each day the net difference is added to the count. When the index reaches a high but the advance-decline line does not that difference shows the rally may lack broad support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Why can the Nifty rise while most stocks fall?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Nifty 50 is weighted by market capitalization. The biggest companies carry most of the weight so a few of them can lift the index when the other 40-plus stocks are flat or falling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. What does it mean when 84% of 50 stocks are below their 200-day moving average?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means that the long-term trend, for most of the index\u2019s components is negative even if the index level itself looks high. That is a sign of leadership and underlying weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Is breadth a sell signal?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Breadth is descriptive not predictive. Narrow rallies can last for months.
