Sells a stock right away at whatever price is available. A limit order works differently. It tells the platform to carry out the trade only if the stock reaches a price.

For an investor buying US stocks from India that difference is more important than it is for a trade. The US market opens at 7:00 PM IST. Closes at 1:30 AM IST during daylight saving changing to 8:00 PM to 2:30 AM during standard time. Using a limit order means the trade does not have to happen the moment the investor’s awake. The price is. The order waits.

What a limit order does

A buy limit order is executed only if the stock price falls to or below the set price. A sell limit order is executed only if the stock price rises to or above the set price.

If a stock is priced at $240 and the investor wants to buy only if it drops to $235 a buy limit order is placed at $235. If the stock never reaches that level the order stays open until it expires or is canceled. If it does reach that level the order is executed at $235 or better.

The trade-off is certainty. A limit order gives control over the price. It does not ensure that the trade will happen. A market order ensures that the trade will happen but not at a price.

How to place a limit order on platforms

On INDmoney: Search for the US stock or ETF then choose a market or limit order. The platform allows limit orders, stop-loss orders and other advanced types. Trades happen at US market prices and you can start investing with as little as $1 through fractional investing.

On Vested Finance: The platform works via GIFT City. Allows limit orders on US stocks. The price can be. The order runs when the condition is met during US market hours.

On Dhan: Through its GIFT City subsidiary Dhan offers US stock investing via the India INX route. The cost is fixed at 0.25% of the transaction value with no account maintenance or custody fees. Limit orders and other types are available.

On Upstox: Limit orders can be placed anytime 24×5 including when the market’s closed. They stay active. Execute automatically when the price conditions are met during market hours.

The GIFT City framework

Most Indian platforms that offer access to US stocks now operate through GIFT City, which is regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). This setup is important for limit orders because it decides how the trade is settled and how the money is handled.

When a limit order is placed through a GIFT City platform the trade happens under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) framework. The money sent to buy US stocks is subject to the $250,000 LRS limit and TCS applies if the amount exceeds ₹10 lakh in a financial year.

The US market timing you need to know

Limit orders can be placed at any time. They only run during US market hours.

The regular US session is from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time. For investors that is 7:00 PM to 1:30 AM IST during daylight saving, which is from March to November and 8:00 PM to 2:30 AM IST during standard time, which is from November to March.

Pre-market trading is from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM IST and after-hours trading is from 1:30 AM to 5:30 AM IST during daylight saving. Limit orders might execute during these sessions but there is less money moving around and the price differences are bigger.

The order types worth knowing

Good-Till-Cancelled (GTC): A GTC limit order stays active until it is executed, canceled or expires based on the brokers rules. Many US brokers automatically cancel GTC orders after 30, 60 or 90 days. This is helpful when a specific price is in mind and placing the order again and again is not needed.

Stop-Limit Order: This combines a stop order and a limit order. When the stop price is reached the order becomes a limit order at the set price. It gives control than a simple stop order but it is not guaranteed to be executed if the stock jumps past the limit.

One-Cancels-the-Other (OCO): An OCO order pairs two orders. If one is completed the other is automatically canceled. This is often used to set a profit goal and a stop-loss at the time.

What retail investors should take from this

The limit order gives Indian investors control over the price at which they buy or sell a US stock. It removes the need to be awake at 1:30 AM to get a price and it stops the price movement that can happen with market orders during wild sessions.

The platform chosen affects how easy it is to place the order. INDmoney, Vested, Dhan and Upstox all support limit orders through their GIFT City setups. The fees and exchange rates vary, so looking at the cost of a round trip is more important than the first number you see.

The order type is not as important as the discipline behind it. A limit order placed at a price is a plan. A limit order placed at a price the stock will never reach is a dream.

FAQs

1. What is a limit order in US stock investing?

A limit order is an instruction to buy or sell a stock at a set price or better. A buy limit is only executed at or below the set price. A sell limit is only executed at or above the set price. It gives control over the price. Not a guarantee of execution.

2. Can Indian investors place limit orders for US stocks?

Yes. GIFT City platforms like INDmoney, Vested, Dhan and Upstox allow limit orders for US stocks during market hours. Some platforms also let orders be placed when the market is closed with execution during the session.

3. What happens if my limit order never reaches the price I set?

The order stays open until it expires or is canceled. If a GTC order is placed it remains active for the brokers time, often 30 60 or 90 days.

4. What is the difference between a limit order and a market order?

A limit order is only executed at the price or better. A market order is executed away at the best available price. Limit orders give control over the price while market orders give certainty of execution.

5. Can I place a limit order through Dhan, for US stocks?

Yes. Dhan offers US stock investing via its GIFT City subsidiary with a cost fixed at 0.25% of the transaction value and no account maintenance or custody charges.
