The trade must happen during a time frame and the tools that make it possible are built around this restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_the_US_market_hours_mean_in_IST\"><\/span>What does the US market hours mean in IST<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq work on Eastern Time. For an investor the time changes by one hour twice a year because the US uses daylight saving from March to November and India does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In daylight saving time the normal session is 7:00 PM to 1:30 AM IST. In time it is 8:00 PM to 2:30 AM IST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pre-market trading happens from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM IST during daylight saving and after-hours trading happens from 1:30 AM to 5:30 AM IST. Limit orders can be executed during these times. There is less money moving around and the spread is larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first 30 minutes and the last 30 minutes of the session have the trading. Institutional investors adjust their positions during the close. The start reacts to news that happened overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_platforms_that_let_people_trade_during_US_hours\"><\/span>The platforms that let people trade during US hours<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indian platforms that offer access to US stocks now work through GIFT City, which is run by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). The trades take place during US market hours. The settlement happens within the GIFT City setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSE IX Global Access. NSE International Exchanges platform lets Indian residents buy US stocks and ETFs. Digital onboarding uses 30-second video KYC with PAN and Aadhaar. It supports investing and there is no set minimum with trades possible from as low as $10. The platform had 2,000 clients sign up on the day of its soft launch. It does not need an overseas demat account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">INDmoney. The platform allows market and limit orders for US stocks with trades happening at US market prices. You can start investing from $1 through shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vested Finance. Vested works through GIFT City. Lets you place limit orders on US stocks that get executed when the price condition is met during US market hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dhan. Through its GIFT City subsidiary Dhan offers US stock investing via the India INX route. The fee is fixed at 0.25% of the transaction amount. There are no account maintenance or custody fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other brokers. Zerodha, Groww, Angel One and Upstox have got approvals to offer US stock trading through GIFT City. The services are expected to be available after tech integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_step-by-step_process\"><\/span>The step-by-step process<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 1: Open a GIFT City trading account. Pick a broker that is registered under the system. Finish KYC with PAN, Aadhaar and a video check. This is different from an Indian demat account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 2: Add money to the account under LRS. Send rupees from your Indian bank account to the GIFT City brokerage account. The bank changes rupees to dollars. Needs Form A2 and a reason code that says the transfer is for overseas investment. This remittance counts towards the $250,000 LRS limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 3: Place the order during US market hours. After money is added, look at the US stocks and ETFs available. Place a market. Limit order. The trade happens during the US session, which&#8217;s from 7:00 PM IST during daylight saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 4: Watch the holding. Keep records. The portfolio is shown in US dollars. Save dividend statements and trade confirmations for tax filing including Schedule FA and Form 67 for Foreign Tax Credit claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_costs_involved\"><\/span>The costs involved<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brokerage. NSE IX and Dhan charge 0.25% of the transaction value. Tickertape starts at 0.15%. Some platforms have no account maintenance or custody fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forex conversion. The bank adds a spread of 1% to 1.5% when changing rupees to dollars. This is the cost that can be controlled in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TCS. Once the total LRS transfers go over \u20b910 lakh in a year 20% TCS applies to the extra. It shows up in Form 26AS. Can be used to reduce the final tax or get a refund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_tax_treatment\"><\/span>The tax treatment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capital gains. US stocks are considered securities under Indian tax law. The long-term period is 24 months. Gains after 24 months are taxed at 12.5% without indexation. Gains before 24 months are added to income. Taxed at the slab rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dividends. The US takes 25% on dividends if Form W-8BEN is filed. India then taxes the dividend at the slab rate. Form 67 allows a Foreign Tax Credit to reduce the US part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schedule FA disclosure. Resident and Ordinarily Resident taxpayers must report all assets in Schedule FA of the ITR including US stock holdings. This is needed even if no shares are sold and no dividends are received. The trade has to fit in. The normal session is the time with the most money moving and the smallest spreads. Pre-market and after-hours sessions can be used,. Digital onboarding, investing and trades from as low as $10 mean the entry point is no longer a problem. The main issue is the timing, which&#8217;s why limit orders are good for people who can&#8217;t stay up until 1:30 AM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tax compliance is not something you can ignore. Its not small. Schedule FA disclosure Form 67 filing and the 24-month holding period are the three things that decide the after-tax result.
