For a purchase the brokerage firm must get payment later than one business day after the trade. If the account already holds dollars this happens automatically. If the investor sends funds from India the timing is tighter. The FX transaction in currency pairs still settles on T+2 meaning a remittance started on the trade date may not arrive in the US brokerage account in time for a T+1 settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That mismatch matters. An Indian investor buying US stocks with funds in the GIFT City brokerage account has no problem. An investor who sends rupees and buys on the day may face a settlement failure if the dollars do not arrive in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When shares are credited. For a sale the seller must hand over the securities to the brokerage firm no later than one business day after the sale. For holdings the broker does this automatically. If settlement fails the trade might be. The counterparty could face penalties.
