There are three types: market orders, limit orders and stop orders. Each type serves a purpose and each has a different trade‑off.

market orders: execution certainty

A market order is an instruction to buy or sell away at the best price that is available. The market order does not give a price. The market order gives a quantity.

The market order is sent to the exchange. Matched with the best opposing order. A buy market order is matched against the available sell price. A sell market order is matched against the available buy price.

The advantage of a market order is certainty of execution. The trade will happen. The disadvantage is that the price is not guaranteed. In fast‑moving markets or stocks that trade thinly the price that the market order fills at can be quite different from the price that the investor saw on the screen.

For large‑cap US stocks during the session the difference is usually only a few cents. For a stock such as Apple or Microsoft the bid‑ask spread is one to two cents and a market order fills quickly at a price that’s close to the last trade.

A market order is the choice when the priority is to enter or exit immediately and when the stock is liquid enough that the price risk is minimal.

limit orders: price certainty

A limit order gives a price. A buy limit order will execute only if the stock falls to or below that price. A sell limit order will execute only if the stock rises to or above that price.

If a stock is trading at $240. The investor wants to buy only if it drops to $235 a buy limit order at $235 is placed. If the stock never falls to that level the limit order stays pending. If the stock does fall to that level the limit order executes at $235 or better.

The advantage of a limit order is price control. The investor knows the price that will be paid. The disadvantage is that the limit order may not execute. If the stock rises of falling the investor misses the trade.

A limit order is the choice when the stock trades thinly when the session is extended or when the investor has a specific price in mind and is willing to wait for it.

stop orders: the trigger

A stop order is different from both market and limit orders. The stop order stays inactive until the stock hits a trigger price, at which moment it becomes a market order.

A sell stop order is placed below the market price. It is used to limit losses. If an investor owns a stock at $100 and wants to limit the loss to 10 percent a sell stop order is placed at $90. If the stock falls to $90 the stop is. A market order is sent to sell at the next available price.

A buy stop order is placed above the market price. The buy stop order is used to enter a position when the stock breaks through a resistance level or to cover a position.

The key risk with a stop order is that once it is triggered it becomes a market order. The execution price is not guaranteed. If the stock gaps below the stop price the trade may fill at a lower price than the trigger. For example a stock that closes at $100 and opens at $85 will trigger a sell stop at $90 but the market order will fill at $85, not $90.

stop‑limit orders: a modification

A stop‑limit order combines a stop order and a limit order. When the trigger price is reached the stop‑limit order becomes a limit order at a price.

This gives control over the execution price. If an investor places a sell stop‑limit order with a stop at $90 and a limit at $88 the stop‑limit order is triggered at $90. Will sell only at $88 or higher. If the stock gaps to $85 the stop‑limit order will not execute all.

The trade‑off is that the investor may be left holding the stock if the price gaps, below the limit. The stop order would have executed at $85. The stop‑limit order stays pending.

how the choice depends on the situation

The right order type depends on the stock the session and the investors priority.

For a large‑cap stock during the session a market order is usually fine. The slippage is small. The trade fills quickly.

For a traded stock or an extended‑hours session a limit order is the safer choice. The spread is wider. A market order can fill at a price that is quite different from the last trade.

For risk management on an existing position a stop order limits the loss if the stock falls. A stop‑limit order gives control over the execution price but may leave the position open if the stock gaps.

For an investor who cannot monitor the trade a limit order or a stop order can be placed in advance. Will execute when the condition is met.

what retail investors should take from this

The order type is not a preference. It is a decision made for each trade based on the stock the session and the investors priorities.

Market orders give execution certainty. Limit orders give price certainty. Stop orders give a trigger for action. Each has a place. Each has a cost.

For an investor buying US stocks through a GIFT City platform the practical approach is to use market orders for liquid large‑caps during regular hours limit orders for everything else and stop orders only when the investor is managing risk on an existing position.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a market order and a limit order?

A market order executes immediately at the available price. It guarantees execution but not price. A limit order executes at a specified price or better. It guarantees price but not execution.

2. What is a stop order?

A stop order stays dormant until the stock hits a trigger price. Once triggered it becomes a market order and executes at the available price. A sell stop is used to limit losses. A buy stop is used to enter a position on a breakout.

3. What is an order?

A stop‑limit order combines a stop order and a limit order. Once the trigger price is reached the order becomes a limit order at a price. This gives control over the execution price but the order may not execute if the stock gaps past the limit.

4. Which order type is best for buying US stocks from India?

For large‑cap US stocks during hours a market order is usually fine. For traded stocks extended‑hours sessions or trades where the entry price matters a limit order is the safer choice.

5. Can I place these orders, outside US market hours?

Limit orders can be placed 24×5 on Indian platforms. They stay active. Execute when the price condition is met during US market hours. Market orders typically execute during the regular session or the extended session depending on the platform.

The trade will execute, at what price and whether the trade will actually happen.
