In Brief About The BSE Holidays List

According to the list posted on the BSE website, there are thirteen trade holidays in 2022. In addition to Saturdays and Sundays, the trade will not occur on these days in 2022. On these trading holidays, the equity sector, equity derivative segment, and SLB segment will be closed.

Here is the complete list of trading holidays for the year 2022, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, which are by default trading holidays. The last list also includes the holidays that fall on Saturdays and Sundays.

Republic Day on January 26 is the only holiday that occurs in January. In March, there are two holidays for Maha Shivratri and Holi on March 1 and March 18, respectively. In April, there are two holidays: Mahavir/Ambedkar Jayanti on Thursday, April 14, and Good Friday on Friday, April 15, 2022.

The only trade holiday in the month of May is on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, for Ramzan Id. Except for Saturdays and Sundays, there are no trading holidays in June and July. On August 9, 2022 (Tuesday), August 15 (Monday), and August 31 (Wednesday), there are three holidays for Muharram, Independence Day, and Ganesh Chaturthi, respectively.

There are no weekday holidays during September 2022. The October 5 (Wednesday), October 24 (Monday), and October 26 (Wednesday) trading holidays correspond to Dussehra, Diwali, and Diwali Balipratipada, respectively. The only trading holiday in November 2022 is on Tuesday, November 8, for Gurunanak Jayanti. There are no trading holidays falling on Saturdays or Sundays in December 2022.

The five annual holidays of Ram Navami, Maharashtra Day, Bakri Id, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, and Christmas all fall on Sundays, so there are no specific holidays designated for these occasions. The stock exchanges may change or alter any of the listed holidays, and any such changes will be communicated in advance via a separate circular.

Similarly, according to the MCX holidays 2022 list, the morning session will be closed on all 13 trade holidays, while the evening session will be open for commodity trading on market holidays such as Mahashivratri, Holi, Ambedkar Jayanti/Mahavir Jayanti, Ramzan Id, and Muharram, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, Diwali, Balipratipada, and Guru Nanak Jayanti. It is essential to note that trading holidays and clearing holidays are distinct. On trading holidays, the market is closed and no trading occurs, whereas on clearing holidays, banks are closed but the market is open. On this day, trading takes place, but the settlement does not occur.

BSE Market Timings

Throughout the trading day, investors can only buy and sell stocks on the BSE during certain trading hours. Similar timings are applied to stock trading on the BSE. The trading schedule for the Indian stock market is as follows:

  • Pre-open session:

The 15-minute window session begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 9:15 a.m. This window session is further subdivided into three-time slots for specific activities, with the intention of providing traders with a decision-making cushion.

  • Order entry period:

Traders will be able to place orders to purchase or sell securities during an initial eight-minute window. During this period, traders may place, modify, or cancel orders.

  • Order matching period:

After the order entry period has expired, traders are no longer permitted to place, modify, or cancel orders. This procedure establishes the opening price and trade confirmation, paving the way for the start of normal or continuous trading sessions.

  • Continuous session of trading:

This session of the stock exchange begins at 9:15 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Throughout the period, orders are continuously matched based on price or time priority.

  • Closing session:

After the normal or regular trading hours conclude at 3.30 p.m., this session continues for an additional half-hour until 4 p.m. It is divided further into two slots.

    • 3:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. slot:

During these 10 minutes, the closing price of stocks is determined by calculating the weighted average price of shares traded between 3:00 and 3.30 p.m. The final half-hour of normal trading hours continues to be crucial in determining the closing price on any given trading day.

    • 3:40 p.m. to 4 p.m. slot:

During this interval, following the day’s trading, a trader can still place an order or choose to sell. However, the placement is only confirmed if subsequent buyers and sellers trade during the time period.

What is Muhurat Trading?

The Indian stock market is closed on all weekends and major public and national holidays, as timely communicated by the exchanges. On Diwali, also known as “Samvat,” the stock market is open for one hour each year for a Muhurat trading session. Muhurat trading also includes pre-opening, normal, and post-closing sessions. This trading hour occurs every Samvat because Diwali is considered a day of good fortune. This session’s time and date change annually and are communicated on the NSE and BSE websites. Due to the high trading volumes, the Muhurat trading session is a good time to buy or sell stocks. The market is usually bullish because the holiday spirit of prosperity and wealth inspires people to be optimistic about the economy and stock markets. Therefore, both new and experienced investors and traders can benefit from the Muhurat trading session.

The NSE (National Stock Exchange) and BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) both permit trading for a limited time on Diwali. The session is typically divided into the following sections:

  • Block Deal Session: During a block deal session, two parties agree to buy/sell a security at a fixed price and notify the stock exchange.

  • Pre-Open Session: The time when the stock exchange establishes the equilibrium price (usually around eight minutes).

  • Normal Market Session: The one-hour session in which most of the trading occurs.

  • Call Auction Session: Where illiquid securities are traded. Security is deemed illiquid if it meets the exchange’s set criteria.

  • Closing Session: The time when traders and investors can place market orders at the closing price.
